Yu Tsok-pak has always been an adherent of

the extremist, or semi-communist group of the

Kuomintang of which Wong Tsing-wai is the most prominent member. This group has now abandoned

Communism and describes itself as the "party of reorganisation" but many of its members were in

the past numbered among the ranks of the Communist

party, and it is among them as well as among the

half bandit half Communist organisations of Ho Lung,

Chu Tak and Mo Chak-tung that the natural allies

of Cheung Fat- fui were to be found; at the same

time General Lui Wun-yin as a former adherent of the Kwangsi clique might, it was felt, welcome this

opportunity to restore the fortunes of his party.

Should all the troops in Kwangsi combine to welcome

the Fourth Army the situation of Canton would be

extremely critical.

5. For a time the situation hung in the balance, then General Lui acted. A mandate was issued from Nanking ordering the dismissal of

Yu Tsok-pak and Lei Ming-sui while simultaneously General Lui fell upon and disarmed the disaffected

troops of Lei Ming-sui. At the same time Yeung Tang-fai declared for the Central Government; shortly afterwards a division of troops hurriedly despatched from Nanking arrived in Canton to form the garrison of the province while a number of river gunboats and a force of Cantonese commanded by
